Frequently asked questions
Is this timesheet template free?
Yes. Download it, edit it and use it for your business at no cost. No sign-up is needed.
Does the Excel file calculate hours automatically?
Yes. Enter clock-in, lunch and clock-out times and the sheet adds up daily hours, weekly totals, overtime hours and gross pay with formulas. Night shifts that end after midnight are counted correctly.
How is overtime calculated in the template?
It uses the federal FLSA rule: hours over 40 in each fixed 7-day workweek are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Weeks are never averaged. Some states add daily overtime, so check your state’s rules.
How long should employers keep timesheets?
Under federal recordkeeping rules, payroll records must be kept for at least 3 years and time cards used to compute wages for at least 2 years (29 CFR 516.5 and 516.6). States can require longer.
